Welcome to the warm heart of Africa! Upon arrival at the Chileka International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Malawi on Wheels guide. After greetings, you will be transferred to Thawale Lodge in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. Majete is Malawi’s premier wildlife destination, experience the full wonder of Malawi’s Majete Wildlife Reserve, restored to diverse abundance with thriving animal populations and plentiful birdlife.

Thawale Lodge is a classic tented camp at the gateway to Majete Wildlife Reserve, completely unfenced camp that provides guests with a unique experience in natural surroundings; a stay at Thawale is a safari in its own right.

Located in a prime location, the lodge is set on the edge of the pristine waterhole that regularly attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including a family of elephants that often frequent the area. The six tented chalets are available as well as two purpose-built air-conditioned chalets for families – each with two en-suite bedrooms, a lounge and veranda. The guest areas consist of a central dining area, open-air bar and restaurant lapa, as well as a birding platform.

Wildlife viewing is excellent, whether on game drive or just relaxing at the Thawale Lodge watching the waterhole, with its constant procession of animals, including lion, cheetah, wild dog, leopard, eland, buffalo and an elephant herd that regularly the area. In the summer months, birding is excellent.

Enjoy your last morning in the reserve. Today you will be transferred to Kara O Mula Lodge at the base of Mount Mulanje. Mount Mulanje is known locally as the “Island in the Sky” because it rises almost from the plains below, which have an average altitude of just 650m. Unlike some of the world’s peaks that are somewhat ‘hidden’ in surrounding ranges, there is a genuine sense of wonder and awe as you draw closer to Mulanje and see it looming over all that surrounds it.

Kara O Mula Resort is an eco-resort located at a pristine site at the foot of the magnificent Mulanje Mountain. The resort is just about 16 km from the Likhumbula Falls and the Dziwe La Nkhalamba natural pool, which is a further 2 or so kms. Kara O Mula Resort offers accommodation ranging from single beds, double bed to family rooms. Spacious terrace chalets are spread out on the lower slope on the edge of the mountain reserve boundary within few meters of each other with vantage views of the great Mulanje Mountain, the surrounding tea estates, the Thyolo Highlands and mountains across the border with Mozambique.

Kara O Mula Resort’s general quiet surroundings make for little disturbance, save monkey, bird and insects and water flowing down the nearby river through small rocky waterfalls. These natural surrounding contribute to what is probably the best mountain holiday eco-resort in the south of Malawi.

Enjoy your last morning in the beautiful tea regions of Malawi. Today the journey continues to Malawi’s premier wildlife destination - Liwonde National Park. The 580 square kilometers wildlife reserve is home to over 400 species of bird, a dense population of hippos, crocodiles, large numbers of elephants and a variety of antelope species. There also regular sightings of lion, cheeter and serval as well as black rhino.

Mvuu Camp is set amongst large, shady trees along the banks of the surging Shire River. The camp offers a charming setting for those wishing to explore the country’s premier wildlife haven. Shire River is Malawi’s largest river; the river attracts hordes of mammals and birds. The impressive thatched dining and lounge area offers magnificent vistas over the river, framed by two large baobab trees. For those wishing to cool off in the midday heat, there is an inviting pool. The camp is completed by a traditional dining under the stars. The camp offers an impressive atmosphere, lively and dynamic.

Today the journey continues on to one of the most stunning destination in Malawi – Mumbo Island on Lake Malawi 45 minutes’ boat ride from the mainland of Cape Maclear. Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical Island, and the undisputed jewel of the Lake Malawi National Park. The Island has never been populated and is still in its natural state with a thick covering of Miombo woodland and ancient fig and baobab trees.

The Island Lodge offers an exclusive escape on an otherwise-deserted island in Lake Malawi’s nature, guests can enjoy ample tranquillity and barefoot luxury during their stay. The waters around the island are clean and calm, and allow all guests - irrespective of fitness or experience to enjoy sea kayaking, snorkelling and SCUBA diving.
