Your day begins with breakfast at the lodge, after which you will be transferred to Blue Zebra Island Lodge. The scenic drive incorporates cultural highlights, including a visit to the Chongoni Rock Paintings in Dedza and the KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art at Mua Mission. Chongoni Rock Art – World Heritage Site

The Chongoni Roack Art area is located on the southern Africa plateau about 80 km south-east of Lilongwe near the town Dedza. Well-preserved rock paintings belonging to a rare African rock art tradition; by the Chewa farmers and by the hunters gathering BaTwa Pygmies. It is an area of forested hills with numerous granite outcrops and kopjes, protected as Forest Reserves. Within the hills, 127 rock shelters have been used for rock art, creating the richest concentration of such art in central Africa. Chongoni has one of the world’s greatest concentrations of rock art known to have been made by women.

The Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art, situated at Mua (Mua Mission) in Malawi’s Central region, was established in 1976. It is recognized as a place where the richness of Malawi’s cultural heritage is unveiled. Its goal is to guide Malawians to a deeper understanding of their country and culture. This understanding is crucial as Malawi faces the challenges of globalization and modernization.

Chamare Museum at the KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art, provide the visitor with an introduction to the richness of the Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao cultures of central and southern Malawi, as well as a little on the BaTwa people, the original and now vanished inhabitants of Malawi. The Museum has three rooms containing photographs, text panels, and displays of objects from the three cultures. The museum displays Nyau masks. Nyau or Gule Wamkulu is the “great dance” of the Nyau secret societies of the Chewa. Gule Wamkulu was declared a ‘Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity’ by UNESCO in 2005. Chamare Museum also provides detailed information on the rituals and rites of passage for the Chewa, Ngoni, and Yao people. It also chronicles, the history of the White Fathers mission work in Malawi dating back to 1902.

From the KuNgoni Centre of Culture and Art at Mua Mission, your journey continues to Blue Zebra Island Lodge, located on Nankoma Island in Lake Malawi, part of the Lake Malawi National Park.
