Arriving at the Chileka International Airport, you will be welcomed by a Malawi on Wheels guide and after greetings, your journey begins. You will be transferred to Game Capture Campsite in the Majete Wildlife Reserve in Chikwawa.

Majete is Malawi’s premier wildlife destination. Experience the full wonder of Malawi’s Wildlife Reserve, restored to diverse abundance with thriving animal populations and plentiful birdlife. This highly diverse 715 km 2 reserve features undulating hills, low-lying grassy plains, and mixed woodland punctuated by the ghost-like Star Chestnut trees and large mahoganies. To the reserve’s east, the Shire river cuts through the landscape and ultimately crashes over the Kapuchira Falls. Majete Hill, the reserve’s highest point, provides a breath-taking vantage point from which to see the whole reserve.

Located in the heart of the reserve at the site of the early wildlife relocations, the Game Capture Campsite is set under a grove of trees, perfect for shade and cool temperatures. Accommodating approximately 25 guests in designated tent sites as well as up to eight guests in served shelters, this is an excellent base from which to explore the reserve.

Enjoy your morning activities in the reserve. Today the journey continues to one of the most iconic destinations in Malawi – Mulanje Mountain. Arriving in Mulanje, will head straight to Likhubula Gateway Lodge on the base of Mulanje Mountain.

Mulanje Mountain is known locally as the ‘island in the sky’ because it rises almost sheer from the plains below, which have an average altitude of just 650m. Unlike some of the world’s peaks that are somewhat ‘hidden’ in surrounding ranges, there is a genuine sense of wonder and awe as you draw closer to Mulanje and see it looming over all that surrounds it.

Nestled on the foot of Mulanje Mountain, offering a stunning view of the mountain and a cozy atmosphere. The lodge’s comfortable rooms are thoughtfully designed to provide a restful retreat after a day of exploring. The friendly staff are always on hand to ensure your stay is as enjoyable as possible. Located in a picturesque setting, Gateway Lodge is the perfect base for exploring the natural beauty and hiking trails of Mulanje Mountain.

Enjoy the afternoon hike to Dziwe La Nkhalamba (Old Man’s Pool) located to the west of Mulanje Massif along Likhubula Stream and it is just at the base of the Likhubula waterfall. Returning to the lodge late afternoon.

Today after breakfast, we get set to leave Mulanje Mountain for Liwonde National Park – one of Malawi’s stunning destinations. Your accommodation will be at the Chimwala Bush Camp.

Liwonde National Park is one of the must-visit safari destinauutions in southern African today – and drifting down the Shire River amidst hippo and other animals coming to drink. It is easy to see a large population of elephant, buffalo, waterbuck, hippo and other large mammals, regular predator sightings like lion, cheetah and wild dog. Enjoy the amzing views across the Borassus palm-studded floodplains. Liwonde is a birdwatcher’s delight with easy viewing of Pel’s fishing-owl, Boehm’s bee-eater, Lilian’s lovebird and Livingstone’s flycatcher.

Chimwala Bush Camp is a great place to stay inside Liwonde National Park. Tucked up against Chinguni hill, and sheltered by a mixture of mopane and miombo trees, the camp is constructed from local rock and thatch. The main area’s al fresco style brings the outside in, with high ceilings and a large garden for dining and leisure. The tents –while classic in style – have some modern features: oversized windows, lovely décor, private verandas and open-air outdoor bathrooms. Enjoy a laze around the pool with its magnificent views across the floodplain. This is truly a treasure of a bush camp.

Enjoy your morning in the park. After breakfast, the journey continues to Mumbo Island on Lake Malawi.

Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island floating on the expansive waters of the Lake Malawi National Park. With a maze of massive underwater boulders, innumerable species of colourful cichlid fish and calm, clear water, the National Park offers what many consider the best freshwater snorkeling and SCUBA diving in the world. The Island is only 1Km in diameter and has never been populated so it remains in a pristine, natural state. Kaya Africa run Mumbo as an entirely off grid, green camp so that it remains as unspoilt and perfect as it has been forever.

Mumbo Island Camp, accommodating fourteen guests, features tastefully furnished chalets with shaded decks, hammocks, hot bucket showers and ‘eco-loos’, complemented by a dining area with bar and a watersport gazebo. The whole camp is built of timber, thatch and canvas, and is perched on high rocks overlooking the water, blending with the lush foliage to create a ‘Robinson Crusoe’ atmosphere of rustic charm. The island is located within an exclusive concession area, guaranteeing privacy in tropical island paradise.

All good things must come to an end! Today prepare to depart Mumbo Island on the Lake Malawi. You will be transferred to the mainland by boat. You will meet your guide and after checking out, you will be transferred to Lilongwe International Airport for your flight back home.
