Lake Malawi National Park

Inscribed as a UNSECO World Heritage Site 1984, Lake Malawi National Park is the smallest national park covering an area of 92 square km. Lake Malawi is the first established freshwater, underwater national park in Africa. The diversity of the lake’s native fish species is unparalleled in the world with over 400 documented species of cichlids of which all but five are endemic.

Located at the southern end of the great expanse of Lake Malawi, Lake Malawi National Park encompasses the sandy beaches and granite islands of Malawi’s Cape Maclear peninsula, the southern end of Lake Malawi. Lying within the Western Rift Valley, Lake Malawi is one of the deepest lakes in the world and has exceptional natural beauty with the rugged landscapes around it contrasting with remarkably clear waters of the lake. The park's clear waters are populated by hundreds of species of colorful cichlid fish, most of which are native to the lake. The park is home to eco-lodges and traditional fishing villages. Facilities for snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking are available.

Cape Maclear (Chembe Village)

Cape Maclear, also known as Chembe, is a fishing village on the northern tip of Nankumba Peninsula on Lake Malawi. The Village is located in the Lake Malawi National, the first freshwater national park in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Domwe Island Camp

Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi, with a circumference of 11km and a highest point 400m above lake level. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow Illala Gap which, due to fluctuations in lake level over the times, has been dry on several occasions.

The island is part of the Lake Malawi National Park. Unlike all other Lake Malawi Islands, Domwe is well populated with mammals.
